Desert Camel Trekking
Crossing the Sahara is a journey outside of time. Certainly, the era of caravans has long since passed, replaced by modern modes of freight transport, but the culture of desert peoples has endured.
Crossing the Sahara is a journey outside of time. Certainly, the era of caravans has long since passed, replaced by modern modes of freight transport, but the culture of desert peoples has endured. Nomadic communities (some have settled) have preserved their traditions. You'll find these steadfast people in Southern Tunisie, more precisely in Douz, where they'll proudly share their history and way of life with you. Sahara, nomadism, oases—they'll teach you more than any documentary, and will be delighted to take you on a camel trek through the desert.
Several routes from cities allow you to reach the Sahara in Southern Tunisie, but Douz remains the best starting point for a desert journey.
Douz, Gateway to the Sahara
Douz was created on the site of an ancient oasis in the desert. Its inhabitants are primarily Merazigues. Known for its traditional souk, the small town is prized as a tourist base for circuits in the south. You can shop here before venturing deep into the Sahara, and especially prepare your camel trek with a local guide.
From abroad, you can fly to the Tozeur-Nefta International Airport. Once on the ground, take a "louage"—a shared minibus-taxi—to reach Douz. The journey takes approximately 2 hours.
If you're already in Tunisie, several local transport options serve Douz. Bus, train, louage, or taxi—it depends on your departure city.
Camel Trekking in the Sahara from Douz
Many operators offer camel tours in the desert. You can even do a trip with an overnight stay to fully enjoy the experience. Before starting your desert journey, guides first teach you how to mount a camel and keep your balance when it stands and moves. Once you're ready, a typical excursion lasts about four hours, after which you'll need to stop and rest.
During a camel trek in the Sahara, you step into an entirely different space and time. Complete disconnect. Passing from fortified villages to oases, skirting dunes and palm groves, imagine the lives of ancient Berber nomads as you progress slowly on your dromedary. Admire the horizons of the Grand Erg oriental. Discover small date plantations, essential sustenance for every desert traveler. Meet the region's shepherds. Thursday is a good opportunity to encounter them at Douz's grand livestock market.
Practical Information
What's the Best Time for a Camel Trek in the Sahara?
To enjoy the best conditions, plan your desert journey for autumn or spring. Avoid the hot summer months when the heat is overwhelming. Choose dates between October and May (keeping in mind that as you approach May, temperatures will rise). Note that from December to January, nights can be freezing, so pack warm clothing.
What to Pack?
It's highly advised to travel light, but there are still a few essential items for a desert trek:
- Long-sleeved tops, trousers, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect you from sun and heat
- Sunscreen (absolutely essential)
- Warm clothing, as temperatures drop at night
- Plenty of water
- Dates and fruit to maintain your energy; you'll find these in Douz.
Happy travels!
